This article contains plot details about the source material.

Yamagata (山形) was a member of the Capsules, a biker gang led by Shotaro Kaneda. He served as Kaneda's right-hand man.

Appearance

Yamagata is unusually strong and tall for his age, standing at 188 cm (and being much taller than an average Japanese man). He is rather muscular, having broad shoulders and a large, somewhat menacing appearance. He wears a red shirt with ripped sleeves, and using bandages over his forearms. Over his shirt, he wears a grey tank top with which appears to be a symbol of the Rising Sun Flag (which is controversial due to the flag's association with the 20th Century Japanese imperialism):

Personality

Very little is shown of him, although he appears to be rather brash and rude, having little manners and consideration towards others (shown when he carelessly burst in and slammed the door of a bar, alarming the barkeep, then proceeding to mock him for being paranoid). Like all other members of the Capsules, he has little to no respect for authority figures, shown when he threathened a teacher who slapped him. He is also rather violent, using a club to slam rival gang members off their bikes. Despite all this, he is a good friend and is very loyal to Kaneda.

Biography

Very little is known of Yamagata, with him only having a few lines and nothing is known of his past. He became the member of the Capsules sometime before the events of Akira. It appears that he is not an original member of the group, since he is not in command (despite him being the oldest and the tallest member of the group.)

Anime

Yamagata is killed by Tetsuo Shima at the Harukiya bar after he confronts Tetsuo about his strange behaviour and questions his involvement in the murder of the bartender.

Manga

In volume one, he is killed by Tetsuo after trying to shoot him during the biker battle. Afterwards, in an attempt to seek retribution for his death, Kaneda shoots Tetsuo, only for him to recover from the bullet wound shortly after.
